The native Mayas lived in the Central American region from around 2000 BC. Their culture is one of the founding civilizations of the world in which artists were regarded as wise men and this artwork by Frida Larios is a celebration of the Mayan hieroglyphic language.
The exhibition shows a wood carved mural and posters that narrate the story behind a Salvadorean archaeological site through life size, hand-painted 'New Maya Hieroglyphs'. The style and composition of the new logograms is rooted in the original Mayan script and the aim is to bring them to life through contemporary visual communications, thus enabling them to be accessed by different audiences such as illiterate people, the visually-impaired and children.
